Shannon’s Experience and Opinions: They do provide a handbook that outlines topics or what they call “knowledge areas” that will be on the exam. It’s a list. That’s it, they don't explain what the list means or provide any kind of educational information. You do have the opportunity to take a free, 50 question practice test (before taking their $99 version). I took the free test and was surprised to find every single question was medically related. I don’t think I could have passed the practice exam (or the full exam) without my previous 10+ years of experience working in a veterinary hospital. Looking back at their requirements for certification it now doesn't surprise me that you need letters of recommendation from veterinarians you have worked with. You must have veterinary medical knowledge to pass this test. It is extremely medically centric. If you do not have medical knowledge I doubt you could pass the test on the first try. Because very little knowledge is provided about what EXACTLY is on the test you would need to pay to take the practice test or pay and take the full exam at least once to find out the kinds of questions they will ask. For that reason it is my opinion that most people will have to take this test more than one time to pass which will in turn drive up the cost you are paying for this certification. For me personally the cost of this certification seems extremely high when you factor in the fact that in the end you are just paying to take a test. You get zero education, you have to provide proof of 300 hours of experience and letters of recommendation during which you have to do all your networking yourself and you get no ongoing support. For those just starting out in dog training, this lack of educational resources and mentorship can make the process feel inaccessible and unreasonably expensive.

Encourages adherence to ethical standards.
Cons:
Does not provide formal education or training.
The certification process can be time-consuming, requiring detailed documentation and client cooperation.
Shannon’s Experience and Opinions: The IACP website provides very limited information about their certification program. They outline a three-part process: 1) Application, 2) Portfolio Review, and 3) Electronic Exam. While I would hope that additional details are provided as you move through each phase, the lack of transparency upfront is concerning. For example, the initial application requires three letters of recommendation, but beyond that, there’s no detailed explanation of what the portfolio must include or what to expect on the exam.
Personally, I find it hard to justify paying nearly $500 without knowing the full scope of the requirements for the portfolio and exam. Unlike some other certification programs, IACP does not provide a handbook or any downloadable resource to guide applicants through the process. While they mention a "member resources" section on their site, it’s only accessible with a paid membership, so it’s unclear what professional resources or ongoing support they actually provide.
For aspiring trainers, the lack of upfront information and transparency about what you're committing to could be a major drawback. Certification programs should not only assess your skills but also support your growth and professional development. Without clear guidance or accessible resources, this program feels more like a test of what you already know rather than an opportunity to learn and advance your career.

Training methodologies cover only positive reinforcement
Minimal business training consists of one module in each of the 4 units. Covers only teaching group and private lessons, marketing, website building and time management.
Shannon’s Experience and Opinions: Karen Pryor Academy is known for its professional instructors and a well-organized program structure. One of its strengths is the detailed handbook that outlines the course clearly, providing a comprehensive view of what students can expect. The program consists of four two-day workshops (offered in person or virtually, depending on your enrollment choice) and four mandatory virtual check-ins, each corresponding to one of the four online course units. These units are divided into 28 lessons, covering topics related to positive reinforcement training.
While the course is structured and thorough, it focuses exclusively on positive reinforcement training with only minimal coverage of business topics. To progress through the program, you must pass a quiz at the end of each lesson, complete training exercises, and submit written assignments as part of your homework.
In my opinion, the education and resources provided seem disproportionate to the cost of the program. The focus on a single training modality and the limited in-person instruction may leave students wanting more variety and depth in their training experience, particularly for those looking to gain expertise in business management or explore other training methods. However, for those committed to mastering positive reinforcement, the program offers a solid foundation delivered by experienced professionals.

Emphasis on humane, science-based training methods.
Access to a supportive professional community.
Cons:
Higher tuition costs compared to some other programs.
Requires a significant time commitment.
Training methodologies cover only positive reinforcement
Minimal business education
Shannon’s Experience and Opinions: Victoria Stilwell Academy is well-regarded for its emphasis on positive reinforcement training and its flexible learning formats. The program offers a hybrid structure, with the option to attend in-person workshops or complete the course entirely online, making it accessible to a broad range of students. The program includes structured online lessons paired with virtual check-ins and mentorship, ensuring a balance of flexibility and accountability.
The curriculum covers essential topics like canine cognition, ethology, learning theory, behavior modification, client teaching, and marketing and branding for dog training businesses. However, the focus is heavily on positive reinforcement training, with limited coverage of business management beyond marketing basics. Students are expected to pass quizzes at the end of each lesson and complete written assignments and training exercises to demonstrate their understanding.
In my opinion, while the program is professionally structured and offers continuous instructor feedback, the cost feels steep given the limited scope of business education and the optional nature of in-person instruction. For students seeking comprehensive business training or exposure to varied training methodologies, this program may fall short. However, for those who are dedicated to mastering positive reinforcement and want a flexible, supportive learning environment, VSA provides a strong foundation delivered by experienced professionals.

Cons:

Requires self-discipline for the online portion of the coursework.
Limited business training
Shannon’s Experience and Opinions: Animal Behavior College (ABC) offers a flexible and accessible program for aspiring dog trainers, combining online coursework with a hands-on externship. This blended learning approach allows students to gain practical experience under the guidance of a mentor trainer while completing structured online lessons at their own pace. The curriculum covers essential topics such as canine behavior, learning theory, obedience training, and business basics, with the added benefit of certification in pet CPR and first aid.
While the program provides a solid introduction to dog training, it focuses primarily on foundational skills and balanced training methods, with limited depth in business education. Students must be self-motivated to navigate the online content and complete assignments independently. The externship offers valuable real-world experience, but the quality may vary depending on the local mentor trainer assigned.
In my opinion, the program is a good starting point for beginners looking to enter the dog training field, especially those seeking a flexible schedule. However, the tuition may feel high given the level of resources and depth of education provided. For those aiming for advanced training techniques or comprehensive business development, ABC may not offer the specialized focus required. That said, it remains a practical choice for individuals starting their journey in dog training.
